School social work
Support in Everyday School Life
School social work is an integral part of many schools in Bochum. It supports children and adolescents in their daily school life, strengthens social skills, and helps them cope with personal or family challenges—confidentially, reliably, and in a way that is closely attuned to the students’ lives.
What that Goal is?
School social work promotes educational equity and equal opportunity. It helps young people overcome their academic and social challenges—regardless of their background, social status, or life circumstances.
What exactly does school social work involve?
Case-by-Case Assistance: Counseling for conflicts, anxiety, pressure to perform, or family problems
Crisis Intervention: Support in Acute Stress Situations
Social Group Work: Promoting teamwork, conflict resolution, and self-confidence
Prevention: Projects on topics such as bullying, media use, addiction, or violence
Supporting Transitions: e.g., in the case of Transition from Grundschule to Secondary School or at the Transition to Vocational Training
Mediation: for additional support, such as youth services, counseling centers, or therapy options
Parent Involvement as Part of the Support System
School social workers also provide guidance to parents—on parenting issues, school-related problems, or finding appropriate support services. These conversations take place on an equal footing and are voluntary and confidential.
Real-world example
A student is becoming increasingly withdrawn and unfocused. The school social worker holds meetings with the student, the parents, and the homeroom teacher. Together, they develop a support plan that incorporates both in-school and out-of-school assistance.
How does school social work function?
Low-threshold: These services are voluntary, free of charge, and confidential
Connected: Close collaboration with teachers, school administrators, youth services, and external specialized agencies
Present: School social workers are regularly on site and available to talk to
Resource-oriented: The focus is on the strengths and potential of children and adolescents
Social Perspective
School social work helps reduce social inequalities and promote inclusion. It supports children and adolescents in their development and helps schools create a supportive learning environment.
